Dental Hygiene for Pets

Posted on 30 April 2015

Your pet’s pearly whites are extremely important. There are certain measures a responsible pet owner needs to take to ensure that his/her pet has healthy teeth. When pet dogs are beset with dental woes, it can be extremely painful and treatment can also be rather expensive. It is better to have your dog on a dental care regime to prevent any dental concerns from arising at all.

Here are a few simple suggestions and pet supplies to keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy.

  • Brush your pet’s teeth.

There are special teeth brushing kits for dogs available. This is probably one of the most important pet supplies in your dental hygiene arsenal. They include dog tooth brushes which are smaller and softer than regular tooth brushes, dog tooth paste which is fluoride free and even a special mouth wash for dogs. Alternatively you can use a strip of gauze lightly wrapped around your finger to brush your pet’s teeth as well.

  • Use the right Technique

When brushing your dog’s teeth, place the brush or gauze-wrapped finger against the teeth at a 45-degree angle and use small, circular motions to clean.  Focus on one area at a time. Don’t stress too much over the inner surfaces of your dog’s teeth as that is where the least amount of tartar accumulates. Take special care of the teeth that touch the side of your pet’s cheek. Brushing your pet’s teeth once or twice a week is more than enough.

  • Do the Chew

Chewing on certain foods go a long way towards preventing dental problems. The added benefit of chewing is that it satiates your pet’s desire to bite things while strengthening his teeth as well. It also massages your pet’s gums and helps keep teeth clean while reducing the build-up of tartar. Consult your vet for toxin-free chew toys.

  • Food for thought

The right kind of dog food can slow down the formation of plaque and tartar. Try not to feed your dog with leftovers from the table and opt for canine treats instead.
As a part of your dog’s dental pet care, provide your dog with a rich meat based diet which will keep his/her teeth healthy and strong. Meat keeps the environment in the mouth healthy so don’t skimp on it.
You can also choose dog food that that will ensure your pet’s dental health. The dental diet is not for all pets however, so consult your vet before you opt for one.

  • Visit the Vet

Small dental health concerns can quickly spiral out of control if not checked sooner. Make sure you check your pet every day for any signs of dental discomfort.

Look out for the following symptoms:

  • Extremely bad breath
  • Excessive drooling
  • Inflamed/Swollen gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Cysts or boils under the tongue

Consult your vet if you notice any of these problems immediately. Make sure you take your pet for a dental check up to the vet every six months to ensure that there are no dental health problems that have gone unchecked on unnoticed. While dental health concerns can seem minor, they can cause a lot of harm to your pet’s health and well-being.
